9 Koi

Location: 303 Centre Street Southwest

Mounted on the west wall of the City Plaza building, this mural was painted by the children from “Super Cool After School” at CCCSA (Calgary Chinese Community Service Association) and designed by Sarah Kopjar. There were four pieces submitted for this project and Sarah’s design was chosen.

The children found a strong sense of belonging in the community by working on this project and it not only got them involved, but it allowed them to utilize the creative skills that they had learned.

Plum flowers are symbolic of strength and resilience; the three Chinese characters stand for, good fortune, prosperity and longevity; and the golden symbol on the top right represents four blessings: happiness, longevity, prosperity, and good health.

Significance of the Number 9

9 is associated with the Emperor of China; he often had 9 dragons who had 9 children. The number 9 is also a homophone of the word “Long Lasting” and is used at wedding or other special occasions.
